Gemmological Institute of India (GII) a project of Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has a clear mandate to develop scientific instrument based methodologies for detecting laboratory grown (or synthetic) diamonds as large solitaires or in melee star sizes as loose stones and in studded jewels. Methods of detecting synthetic diamonds, both of HPHT and CVD origins have been developed using a variety of spectroscopic techniques e.g. surface fluorescence, Raman, FTIR, and UV-Vis absorption. However, when one is dealing with large sample lots of melee star sized diamonds, such techniques are not feasible or economical to ensure zero-tolerance of synthetics getting mixed in to natural diamond supply chain.

Arotek Scientific Instruments Pvt. Ltd. have a wide experience of repairing and servicing of spectroscopic instruments viz. XRF, ICP-AES instruments, and in technical collaboration with GII they have developed Qchk++AdC instrument for detection of synthetic diamonds.
